The Black Beauty is a midge pattern that is very easy to tie. This baby can be fished practically any time of the year.
Thread: Black 6/0 Ribbing: Sml Gold Ultra Wire Head: Black Hares Ear Dubbing This particular fly was a little more advanced for me. I found it difficult to get the legs in the correct position and the resin was tricky to work with (not to mention is smells like s$$t). All and all it is a beautiful fly and a productive one to boot.

One of the most fun as well. You can tie this bad boy up in an array of different colors using ultra wire. It imitates an array of different aquatic larvae. Thread: Black 6/0, Body: Small Ultra Wire Head: Black Hares Ear Dubbing The Sparkle Dun is a dry fly meant to be fished on the surface water. This fly imitates an emerging aquatic insect shedding its nymphal exoskeleton. This was my first attempt at tying a dry fly pattern. They can be tricky to tie due to the deer hair being unstable on the shank of the hook. This fly was surprisingly easy to tie. If you are new to tying and are looking for a solid dry fly patter, I suggest this one. Thread: 6/0 Olive Hook: #14 Dry Fly 1X Shuck: Brown z-lon Wing: Natural comparadun hair and z-tron The woolly bugger is a well known and highly fished streamer fly. The original bugger has been thought to be developed around 1967 to imitate a helgramite (picture to left). Today, the woolly bugger is fished in a variety of colors and sizes. I myself use this bad boy fishing when I am fishing for bass, northern, and trout. This has to be one of the funnest flies I have tied yet. Simple yet effective, the clown egg is an awesome fly. Best fished during the early fall and spring time, the clown egg imitates, obvoiously, a fish egg tumbling on the bottom of a river. The best part about tying these flies is that you can use an unlimited amount of combinations of colors and sizes. I have attached a video from www.intheriffle.com for instructions on how to tie this fly. http://www.intheriffle.com/fishing-vi... Thread: White 6/0 Egg: Egg yarn (yellow, pink, red) |
Fly tyingFly tying has been around for centuries. It goes hand in hand with the sport of fly fishing. I have found this aspect of the sport to be very therapeutic and will be including the flies I attempt to tie in this blog. Archives
